2022 Chemistry Summer Research portrait (see larger image)

Each chemistry major has an opportunity to join a faculty member’s research laboratory. These faculty-led research groups expose students to modern technology and instrumentation, and help them develop problem-solving skills in the chemical sciences.

Our faculty are experts in every major area of chemistry, ensuring our students will be challenged and intellectually engaged in their projects. We recruit faculty based on their enthusiasm for working with undergraduate students and sustaining active research labs. Under the guidance of these dedicated teachers and researchers, our students gain a partner in data collection and analysis, and receive guidance on how to communicate their findings.

Faculty-Student Publications

Our focus on undergraduate research provides an experience that is rare among universities. Our students conduct and collaborate on independent research projects that are often reserved for graduate students at other schools. In fact, our students often present their research alongside faculty and graduate students from other institutions. In the past five years alone, we have sent more than 150 students to present at national research conferences. And since 2010, our undergraduates have co-authored many peer-reviewed manuscripts, including articles in prestigious journals such as Analytical Chemistry, Angewandte Chemie, Biochemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, The Journal of Chemical Education, The Journal of Organic Chemistry, and The Journal of Physical Chemistry. This experience ensures our graduates are well prepared for pursuing careers or earning advanced degrees in chemistry.
